We understand that moving always involves some degree of stress. We start by assessing your current situation, share the services we offer, breaking it down into specific steps designed to make your move easier. Some people just need a head start at organizing and planning, others prefer full hands-on help from planning and decluttering, through packing and moving, to unpacking and organizing your new home. Are you a moving company?

No. We are not a moving company, but rather Move Managers that prepare and arrange every step of your move. We have no trucks and we don’t physically move items, but we do have working relationships with qualified moving companies and are happy to make recommendations. We make all the arrangements for your moving day, supervise the movers while they load and unload, and ensure your items are properly placed in your new home.  

I don’t feel disorganized. Do I really need a professional organizer?

Though many people are very well organized, they can still feel overwhelmed when it comes time to move. Rightsizing a lifetime of collections and deciding what items to take with you, all within a limited timeline, can add stress to any family. (See Rightsizing). Organization is helpful, especially if you or your loved ones are moving into a smaller home. Also, many people simply don’t have time, or seniors need extra help due to limited ability. There are many aspects involved and Let’s Make This Move is here to help.

When is the time to start an organizing project?                                                                   

Once the decision to move has been made, it’s time to get started. Getting organized is part of our process because it makes each step smoother. We begin with a planning consultation to review your situation. The first thing we organize is your timeline, it can be spread out over months, or done in a shorter period of time. Together, we build a plan to meet your specific needs.

Am I going to have to throw everything away?

Definitely not!  We understand that you may own things that have a powerful emotional connection for you. We respectfully work with you to help you make sense of the items in your home and if you want to let go of some of them, we can help you do that. The decisions are yours to be made and we will never force you to let go of anything that you want to keep.

Do I need to purchase containers and wrapping supplies?

No, please don’t, as they can add more clutter. For local moves, Let’s Make This Move provides all the wrapping supplies, bins, and containers needed to pack your items. At your new home, we unpack and set up then we’ll take those supplies back with us and out of your way! If plans include longer-term storage or a long distance move, you will need to purchase moving supplies, and we can help you make the most economical choices.

If I decide to get rid of some things, what do you do with them?

We can help you decide what is best to do with the things you will no longer need. Some may be donated to a charity of your choice, others may be worth selling.  For items you wish to sell, we can refer you to appropriate vendors who may be able to sell, auction, or consign your items. We are also happy to arrange for a moving sale or sell the items for you. Anything left of little or no value can be discarded or recycled.

I’m embarrassed about the condition of my home, of how bad I’ve let things get, how I can let someone in to help me?

We will never judge you or your space. Senior Move Managers™ are trained to operate with a code of ethics, and we treat all of our clients with respect and dignity. We work with many clients in many situations and are simply happy to help organize people’s lives and make these important transitions a smooth as possible.  

How long with this process take?

The length of time it takes depends on you and how quickly you need to or want to move. While decluttering a space, most of the decisions need to come from you and you may need time for this process. We find that starting early and working together in 2-4 hour segments is most efficient and prevents people from getting overwhelmed. In our initial consultation, we will plan a realistic timeline and determine which services best fit your needs. 

Is this the worst you’ve ever seen?

Highly unlikely! Let’s Make This Move has been in hundreds of homes, helped all sorts of people, and seen all kinds of things. Remember, we are professionals with a high degree of empathy and will not judge you. Please don’t stress — allow us to do what we do best, help you downsize and transition with ease. 

Why do you use the Dragonfly?

The dragonfly is a great metaphor for flexibility, growth, and transformation. It occurs later in the life-cycle of the dragonfly. These wonderful dragonflies spend serious time, underwater in a nymph stage. Eventually, the nymph crawls onto a reed above the water’s surface, emerging from its watery existence to breathe air for the first time.

With a new lease on life, the nymph quickly adapts to a new environment. Its old skin is shed as a mature dragonfly emerges. Once freed, this new life form takes flight, going forwards, backwards, up, down, and side to side. It can even stay still in midair! Newly emerged, it leaves behind the life of a nymph and enjoys the freedom of a lightened load. What a life!

The dragonfly represents how life could be, especially for esteemed seniors. We work hard most of our lives, then one day we say enough, and crawl onto that reed and start to breath fresh air. The last portion of our lives, like that of the dragonfly, should free us up to spread our wings and fly. Free to go places we have never been, and to do things we have never done. This is the time to lighten our load, downsize our homes, and unburden ourselves from the things we hold onto. Leave the responsibilities to someone else and simply enjoy what life still has to offer.
